Johan Fredrik Knudsen’s life as a sailor and ship carpenter started in 1901 when, at the age of 15 he sailed out with the ship Flora av Langesund. He lived in the Holman area of Fredrikstad, Norway almost all of his life. When he died in 1948, he left behind his tattoo equipment and a large collection of hand-drawn motifs. The material, which is completely unique and has not been shown publicly since Knudsen worked as a tattoo artist, forms the main basis for this book. With this, a new chapter is added to Norwegian maritime and tattoo history.
