In 1992, when American photographer Sandi Fellman was visiting Japan she began the series of color portraits for this striking volume. She used a rare large size Polaroid camera to create these photographs. Her subjects were the Irezumi, a secretive group of people drawn from the underworld of Tokyo and Osaka who wear elaborate full-body tattoos. This book includes text on the tattooing process, common motifs, the sociology of the tattoo, and relationships between the tattoo masters and their clients.
